Benefits of Scalp Exfoliation. How to Do It Right?

Scrubs make us think of the face or body. Few people know it pays to get rid of the dead cells from the scalp too. How to exfoliate something all covered in hair?! There are some great ways to do it so read on!

Scalp exfoliation benefits

Why use scalp exfoliation? You probably ask this question if you’re new to the topic. The truth is that this treatment really makes sense and there are many reasons why it pays to use it.

It turns out that scalp exfoliator (used regularly):

  • increases blood flow to the scalp and nourishes it.
  • strengthens the follicles and prevents hair loss.
  • speeds up hair growth in a natural way.
  • gives you healthier and better-looking hair.
  • helps clear the scalp of product build-up, etc.
  • minimizes risk of irritations, itchiness and dandruff.

What happens if you don’t use a scalp exfoliant regularly?

If you don’t go for scalp exfoliation, there are two options: nothing happens because you use well-suited products or you don’t clean the scalp fully so hair conditioning and styling products start building up, leading to irritations, itchiness, oily scalp and dandruff. The other option is definitely more common and that’s why scalp exfoliation is recommended for anyone no matter the type of hair or products they use.

Scalp exfoliation step by step

Doing scalp exfoliation can be easily done at home. All you need is the right product and some spare time.

  • Step 1. Shampoo the hair as usual.
  • Step 2. Apply your exfoliant on the damp roots of hair.
  • Step 3. Smooth the product over the scalp massaging it.
  • Step 4. The massage should take from 3 to 5 minutes tops.
  • Step 5. Wash the exfoliant out fully.

Which scalp exfoliant to choose?

As far as different scalp exfoliants go, there are two basic types. Of course the exact directions for use differ for specific products so it’s best to stick to the instructions in the leaflet.

  1. PHYSICAL EXFOLIANT – fine or coarse grain exfoliant which uses abrasive particles soaked in cream or gel. You can make it easily at home: mix shampoo or hair oil (base ingredient) with sea salt, sugar, crumbled rolled oats or raspberry seeds.
  2. ENZYME EXFOLIANT – it is based on enzymes that speed up the natural exfoliation process. It effectively removes dead cells and scalp buildup but it’s used slightly differently (without massage) and doesn’t stimulate blood flow as much as physical scrubs do.
